The Netbook Revolution

The original EeePC 701 netbook was a landmark of a computer. It was lightweight, simple, fast and efficient to a fault. It was the one gadget you actually wanted to take with you on walks, short trips, onto the bus, train, in the car and everywhere else you may have had a few moments of solitude.

What it brought with it was the usefulness and features that you might otherwise expect in a much larger laptop that, while being transported and carried about, would have been comparable to a sack of potatoes. This was unheard of in the mainstream general computing industry at the time time.

In a tiny package it gave you fast start up times, web browsing and email for research and communication, music playing capabilities and more. It was the perfect traveling companion as it also offered security and indiscretion; where a laptop would have been obvious in a crowded place that you weren’t familiar with and people all around that you didn’t know, the EeePC was hiding in your backpack or bag, discretely awaiting your command and ready for work whenever and wherever you were.

It started the revolution that we hoped would happen but were not sure actually would, and it showed that truly, great things really can come in small packages.
